Music From ‘The Sweeney’ | Series Four| 4.2

THE SWEENEY 10This is it.  It’s over.  We are through!

Four series with nearly all of the incidental library music cues, in order in the best quality I could muster.  I’ve enjoyed doing it and it feels good to have finally sorted them out, to have dug out some of those long term unknowns after all these years (thanks to Pumi & Shadok for help).

Music From ‘The Sweeney’ | Series Four| 4.1

THE SWEENEY 9

The final leg, Series Four.  With Robin Phillips leaving KPM and setting up Bruton Music, this new library is featured heavily in the last series.    With an established relationship with ITV, particular LP’s had been commissioned for ‘The Sweeney’ (KPM 1157 ‘The Hunter Suite’ and it’s sister release KPM 1168 ‘Drama’), which is why titles on the original cue sheets are different from those on the LP.  They hadn’t yet appeared on any library LP and sometimes TV companies would ask for a specific type of music, agree they would use it extensively, bringing in money to the library and it’s composers with the agreement that the library wouldn’t release to other companies on vinyl for a set period.

Bruton inherited the Regency Line library and consequently put the best stuff out as a Bruton LP.   This is why ‘Pulse Macabre’ appears in ‘The Sweeney’ before it had a Bruton release.  It had been released on Regency Line, which is where the music editor must’ve sourced it.

I think Brian Bennett and Bruton must have done well out of ‘Drama Montage’- it was used a lot; not only in ‘The Sweeney’ but also in Famous Five, Prisoner Cell Block H, ‘Scream For Vengeance’, ‘Getting Even’ (aka ‘Tomcats’), a UK headache tablet advert, etc.

A word about the unknown tracks:

Unknown 10:  I’ve had a decent dig around for this and it should pop up sooner or later now that I have engraved it into my brain.

Unknown 11 is ‘The Plot’ with a tinkly piano overdubbed. It’s the piano we’re after.

Unknown 12 is one I’d like to find, but haven’t yet after looking in all the obvious places.

Music From ‘The Sweeney’ | Series Three| 3.3

THE SWEENEY 8Series 3 draws to a close with these last five episodes.  Series 3 has had some great music in it and as the fourth series approaches Bruton Music were setting up shop, giving the music editors more ‘Dramatic Moods for Fights, Action and Car Chases’ LPs to needle drop.

HipstamaticPhoto-608480221.827241

‘Dirty River’ and ‘Dixie Lady’ from the ‘Country Thing’ LP were also used for the soundtrack for once-seen-never-forgotten UK film ‘Diversions, directed by Derek Ford aho also gave us the elongated PIF ‘Take An Easy Ride’ (both were chock full of De Wolfe tracks).  Those of you who’ve been following Retro-Teque from way back may remember I compiled soundtracks for both around 2010-11.

This volume has a couple of tracks from the great ‘Blood On the Flowers’ LP, from ‘Loving Arms’, including the fantastic and brooding title track.

Music From ‘The Sweeney’ | Series Three | 3.1

THE SWEENEY 6UPDATED: 26/04/20– Thanks to Pumi

Well here we are at Series Three and Volume 6; again KPM heavy and a nice mix of styles.   This is a great way to get into library music.  Should any of you be fans of The Sweeney with a passing interest for the incidentals, now so familiar after watching thise episodes again and again, this is a great window into a world of great, great, fantastic music.  Just listen to ‘Name of the Game’ if you had any doubt.   Sampled by many and loved by library lovers across the world this ‘tense masculine underscore’ is the business.   Maybe Library Music can find some new fans through these killer pieces, written to be throwaway, not too distracting pieces to make the pictures come alive on our films and TV shows.   There is a thriving community of fans keeping this music alive.

THE SWEENEY 5So we are half way with this, the fifth volume concluding Series Two.   As usual relying heavily on KPM and De Wolfe, with a shot of Chappell to spice things up, we have the usual funky incidentals (‘Funky Pusher’ anyone?)  and loungy muzak tunes.    Also includes one unknown, not yet identified track, Unknown 5, heard at the beginning of ‘Golden Fleece’.

THE SWEENEY 4September 1975 and we’re into Series Two.  More funky vibes, more action tracks, more loungey  tunes than you can shake a cocktail stick at.

HipstamaticPhoto-607705854.537598You get more episodes per volume as many of the tracks from Series Two were already in the first Series; so we get six episodes worth of music here; from ‘Chalk and Cheese’ to ‘Trap’.

As an aside, these tracks did find life on a previous incarnation of Retro-Teque circa 2010-11 time on a series of The Sweeney comps.  Files were crappy compressed 128kbps- unheard of these days and are well due the upgrade!

Music From ‘The Sweeney’ Series One | 1.2

THE SWEENEY 2Here is Part Two of the full series of The Sweeney in music form, all the library cuts I could get my hands on, from ‘Jigsaw’ to ‘Cover Story’, this one is 34 tracks (and might just be slightly too big to get on a CD).   This one is heavy on pop-rock muzak from KPM 1135 – Discoteque, in particular the episode ‘Night Out’.

Music From ‘The Sweeney’ Series One | 1.1

THE SWEENEYThis has been a labour of love that goes way back to the early days of Internet forums; in this case the old Vinyl Vulture forum.   When Network released ‘The Sweeney’ on DVD initially they included ‘Music Only’ tracks which made it easier for fans of ‘The Sweeney’ and library music to start properly ID’ing the tracks used in the show.

Dave Matthews collated all the bits of knowledge we shared and created the fantastic and still in existance ‘Shut It! The Music of ‘The Sweeney’ site.

HipstamaticPhoto-607768219.197905There’s been a list of unknown tracks and some are still unknown but over the years as I bought more and more records most have been ID’d now.   The release of Series One on blu ray included a list of the cue sheets which helped uncover a couple more mysteries.  So this is where we are, in March 2020.  I should and could have done this years ago but never had the time until this week to take on a pretty big undertaking and I wanted to get it right. Fingers crossed track numbers stay in place and there aren’t any big gaps of silence or anything.

First up are the cues used from the pilot up intil ‘Queen’s Pawn’.  I’ve re-recorded a fair few just for this to try and get the best quality.   I’ve gone for an almost completist approach including the vast majority of the ‘muzak’ used; background pop or classical heard in a pub or on someone’s radio.  You can pull out the ones you like and bin the rest.  I figured if I’m doing it I’ll do it the best I can.
